Professional profile

I’m the Founder and now Managing Director here at CapitalQ Business Advisers & Chartered Accountants.  I am a Business Adviser, Chartered Accountant (“CA”) and Chartered Tax Adviser (“CTA”) holding a Bachelor of Commerce, Majoring in Accounting and Finance and Minoring in Business Law from the University of Western Australia.

I’m a Member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (“CAANZ”), The Tax Institute (“TIA”) and The National Tax Accountants Association (“NTAA”). I am also a Registered Tax Agent.

During my career, I have undertaken various additional studies and qualifications in other, complementary, disciplines including having obtained a Diploma in Financial Planning and a Certificate of Financial Services (Finance Broking) among others.

I started my career as a Graduate Accountant in the Business Services Division at RSM (formerly RSM Bird Cameron) providing similar services, more or less, to small and medium enterprises that I do now. I am very pleased to tell you that one of my very first clients as a Graduate Accountant is still a client today having followed me around since 1997 (that’s 26 years and counting Mike!!!).

I started my professional studies as soon as I achieved the minimum experience requirements and I was lucky enough to complete my qualifications in the shortest time possible without missing a beat. Along the way I achieved two Merit Awards for being in the top 5% of students in the country and I also won Best State Candidate for being the top student in WA in the Business Advisory Module.

The day I qualified as a Chartered Accountant I joined the Corporate Tax Division at Deloitte where I was earmarked for a managerial role however, as I had other longer-term plans, I decided to move on and instead consulted directly to my biggest client at the time, MLC Masterkey (formerly Flexiplan Australia).

I then did the almost obligatory stint in London doing all sorts of interesting work, the most memorable being in Aviation Reinsurance, working on the aftermath of the World Trade Centre Terrorist Attacks.

When I returned to Australia I returned to RSM for a short time in a consulting role specialising in Business Succession and Estate Planning before finally realising my dream of commencing my own business in 2005 at the age of 29.

I absolutely love running my own business and trying to find ways to improve it. But of course, much more important is that I love enabling our Team to provide genuine results for our Clients, in the form of tax savings, business efficiencies, increased profits, accumulated wealth, more time, the lifestyle they desire and ultimately, peace of mind!

Helping our Clients to do well in business and in wealth creation and then seeing them using that wealth (both time and financial) to enjoy their lives and achieve real peace of mind is what we are all about.

Personal profile

I have always been a mad keen cricketer but the body started to let me down so I retired in 2012. Then I was dragged back in 2014 (with the same body)!  I am a member of Mt Lawley District Cricket Club and have been for some 36 years. During this time I played A Grade Cricket and was lucky enough to play against some of the best Australian cricketers of the last quarter of a century.

I now split my time between Perth and WA’s South West.  While I love Perth, I can’t spend enough time in our beautiful south west.  I now play cricket for Vasse Cricket Club and was awarded the Cricketer of the Year in 2021/22.  I was also honoured to be an inaugural member of the Clubs first ever A Grade side in 2022/23.  I am very proud to have been a part of history at the Club and to a small extent in the town of Vasse, I look upon that very first Team Photo with pride (unfortunately, we didn’t win that first game, and I dropped a catch can you believe it, but we gave it a red-hot crack).

Aside from cricket, my primary passion is travel and I work hard to give myself the chance to get away. Recent destinations include Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Oman, Italy, Canada, France, Chile, Argentina, Croatia, Namibia, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Uganda, Antarctica, The Galapagos Islands, New York, India, Mauritius & Reunion, and Fiji (just to name a few).

Since I finished cricket (the first time) I have also become part of the Lycra brigade and love my Specialized Roubaix bicycle.

I am also working on my sailing skills, having recently become involved at the Royal Perth and Dunsborough Bay Yacht Clubs, as well as my photography skills, hopefully it will be my photos that you see more and more of on our website.

Most recently, I have undertaken my first flying lesson, and intend to obtain my Private Pilots License!!!

You can learn more about me via my LinkedIn profile at au.linkedin.com/in/duncanmelbin/ and by following my commentary on all things tax, wealth building and business success in our Newsroom (though I will confess, recently business, both CapitalQ as well as my outside business interests, have been very time consuming, so the posts have not been as frequent as they once were, I will do my best to improve upon this very soon).
